🎨 Dyes & pigmentsHow to remove hair dye stains

Oxidative dye · a race against time

Hair dye develops its color by oxidizing inside the hair, so when it gets on clothes, the fibers get dyed the same way. The first few minutes after it lands matter most; once it has oxidized and set, it's a stain that's hard to remove completely at home.

🔬 Why this order works

Hair-dye molecules meet air and the developer (oxidizer), form large color molecules and become trapped inside the fibers. The key is to wash out as much as possible with water before oxidation finishes; any color left can only be faded with bleach.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

👕 By fabric

⚪ White cotton & linen

Repeat the oxygen bleach soak, and if the care label allows, use chlorine bleach as the final step.

🎨 Colors & synthetics

Try cold water, detergent and alcohol. Bleach removes the garment's color too, so the fading may end up more noticeable than the stain.

🧶 Wool, silk & cashmere

Blot and rinse with cold water immediately, then take it to a dry cleaner.

🚫 Don't

  • Hot water — the dye gets embedded deeper.
  • Leaving the stain for more than a day.

⏳ If it has already dried

Hair dye stains that have set for more than a day often won't come out completely at home. Fade white cotton with bleach, and for clothes you care about, consult a dry cleaner.

💡 Tip

When dyeing your hair at home, the surest approach is to wear dark clothes you don't mind ruining and drape a plastic cape or an old towel around your neck.

❓ Common questions

What about hair dye on towels?

White cotton towels fade quite a bit with repeated oxygen bleach soaks. It's a good idea to set aside a dark towel just for dyeing your hair at home.

Is removing hair dye from skin the same?

No. Don't use bleach or alcohol on skin; wash it off with cleansing oil or soap. If your skin gets irritated, stop and consult a professional.
